History of St Peter’s Church
St. Peter’s Church was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, R.A. (1811–78). He also designed the Albert Memorial (1862–63), St. Pancras Station and Hotel (1865), the chapels of Exeter and St. John’s Colleges, Oxford, and the Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh. St. Peter’s Church was built in 1845–46. The church consists of a nave, chancel, north porch, and an open western turret with one bell. The roof is constructed of dark-stained deal with oak mountings. The east and west windows are ornamented with stained glass, and the floor is made of encaustic tiles.
The church was decorated with a stone front, and inside, a mosaic inlay replaced the plaster, depicting the Dove (Luke 3:21–22), the keys of St. Peter (Matthew 16:13–20), and the symbols of Alpha and Omega, the first and last (Revelation 1:8). The church can accommodate 288 worshippers.
